BRK / First Alert Brand Photoelectric Smoke Detectors
 Most people assume their homes are free from radioactive materials; however, check the fine print on the back of your smoke detector. If it says: " Americium-241 or AM-241 " it's radioactive, and according to a growing scientific opinion constitutes a potential bio-hazard.
This radioactive material, which is contained between thin layers of gold and silver foil, can be released into the environment if the detector is tampered with, damaged due to fire, crushed in disposal or incinerated. While the amount of Americium-241 contained in each detector is considered "small" - in the range of 1 to 5 microcuries - it is more than enough to cause cancer if inhaled or digested. Also, reports such as those in THE PETKAU EFFECT (in the book section) warn about the harmful effects of continual low doses of radiation. While the radioactive material inside typical ionization-type smoke detectors is not likely to break free from its container, it nevertheless constitutes a constant very low-level exposure. Continual low-level nuclear irritation may cause a disturbance of life-energy functions over an area larger than classical radiation theory predicts, via the unshieldable oranur effect discovered by Dr. Wilhelm Reich and independently observed by other scientists (see SELECTED WRITINGS by Reich, and UNUSUAL, LONG-DISTANCE ... NUCLEAR EFFECTS... in the book section). Many people are sensitive, or even allergic to these low-level nuclear effects, to oranur, and have reported a dulled and stuffy quality to the air in rooms where radioactive smoke detectors are located. Others have reported an irritating feeling from radioactive smoke detectors, with symptoms of insomnia or other bioenergetic conditions.
The alternative to this potential health hazard is a non-radioactive, photoelectric smoke detector which uses a tiny beam of light to detect smoke particles. Compared with radioactive detectors that rely on ionized air, photoelectric detectors use no atomic-radioactive materials whatsoever. They are additionally less sensitive to humidity and cooking smoke -- which means fewer annoying false alarms, increased sensitivity to larger smoke particles, and faster detection of smoldering fires, the most common and deadly of all household fires. Unfortunately, most of the smoke detectors sold in hardware stores to the public are of the cheaper radioactive variety. Only a few companies make photoelectric non-radioactive smoke detectors, and, after receiving many requests from people who were sensitive to the energetic disturbances given off by the radioactive varieties, we are glad to make the photoelectric varieties available. People generally report a fresher and more alive feeling in their homes and bedrooms after replacing their radioactive smoke detectors with the photoelectric variety.

Limited Warranty: All our meters and devices are warranted by the manufacturer against defects of materials and workmanship, excluding abuse or misuse or breakage of parts by the purchaser, for a period of one year from the date of purchase. Malfunctioning smoke detectors are warranted only by the manufacturer, and must be returned to the manufacturer following the instructions given on the User's Manual that comes with the detector (you can review this via the PDF Downloads identified above). Natural Energy Works is not responsible for manufacturer's errors or for improper installation, maintenance or use of these smoke detectors, nor for any claims arising from their malfunction or misuse. It is the buyer's responsibility to correctly install the photoelectric smoke detector, according to the provided instructions and local building codes, to make sure the batteries are changed as needed (standard alkaline battery should last about one year), and to check them for proper operation at least once per year, to insure the alarm is working correctly. Please check your local building and fire codes regarding what is required for your home. In some cases, smoke detectors may be required to have both hard-wiring to household current (120v) as well as battery power. Our photoelectric smoke detectors are UL approved. This Warranty is limited only to replacement of malfunctioning detectors during the period of warranty, and your personal fire-prevention and emergency-response procedures should not be reliant only upon smoke detectors.
